My deepest gratitude to those who braved the crowds and came out to the show to support us and to those who cheered us along on the sidelines.

The show is over and I am grateful for the opportunity to have participated in it.

All my trust went into the show photographer to capture some good images, for the low light, high ceilings and deep yellow tungsten lighting was a difficult environment to capture a decent photograph in.

It was only when the lights went on before and after show time that I was able to get a decent photograph with my camera.
Unfortunately I was exhausted by the end of each evening to set up my tri-pod and click off photos.
So I will wait until the show photographer contacts us to look at his proofs in order to post a well composed and correct exposure photo.

In the mean time , here is one that I took on the last day of construction set-up before they lit the hall for 'show time drama lighting'.



I'll post more about the show and some of the great new people I met soon.
But tonight is the S.F. Bromeliad monthly meeting and I must get on the road.

As far as awards go, we took Best of Show and was given the Golden Gate Cup.
We also were given a gold medal for over all merit and the APLD award metal.

judges select award winning gardens at the
23rd annual san francisco flower & garden show

(San Francisco, Calif. March 11, 2008) – Awards were presented for display gardens at the San Francisco Flower & Garden Show tonight at the Cow Palace. The daunting task of judging the show gardens was given to a panel of three judges handpicked for their extensive horticultural and design knowledge. This year’s judging panel consisted of David Stevens, Lucy Hardiman and C. Colston Burrell. In addition to selecting the garden that is “best of show” – the Golden Gate Cup – the three judges also determined how well the gardens achieved their declared design objectives and the quality of execution. They presented gold, silver, bronze or crystal awards to the following display gardens.

Day One of Set Up. S.F. Garden Show '08

Day One - Set up.

Not much energy left at the end of day one of set up at the Garden Show.

But here is a photo of Miguel adjusting the water weir .

They have a wonderful design and drop dead beautiful plants !!!

This is surely going to be one of the most spectacular gardens in the show, though there appears to be a great deal of talent this year. Yeah!!!!!

Count down time

Just one more week to prepare for the garden show.

Yesterday I was able to squeeze in a plant shopping trip between projects.

I almost never go shopping in San Francisco for plants . Mostly because the wholesalers that are located in the city are ‘interior foliage’ plant shops and not ‘landscape plant nurseries’.

So I was a little bit like a fish out of water shopping for orchids and other subtropicals that would fit in the ‘interior plant’ column.

Coincidentally the wholesaler that I was shopping at was having an open house so I did not look like a complete newbie wandering the uncharted interior plantscape aisles.

I found some absolutely big huge beautiful bromeliads imported from Hawaii and Florida and a great assortment of orchids.



Once home and unpacked I couldn’t resist doing a mock up of the small bench ‘table-scape’ that will be placed near the entrance doorway of the exhibit.



I’m borrowing a nicely weathered teak bench from a friend and will place a lovely old antique stone grinding mill from Indonesia on the table . In the stone mill I will place our post cards . On the table will be our collaborators brochures and cards along with a nice Tillandsia and orchid.

I also had time to liberate a Doryanthus palmerii from my garden. It will be used in the display garden and will be surrounded by brilliant red foliaged bromeliads and succulents.



And I finally put together the tea service set that will be placed next to the chaise lounge


Tomorrow is all about more details, mostly to do with construction and not with plants, color or fun details.
It about more pumping and plumbing connections, electrical conduits, framing and blocking for the buddha head stand . Boring stuff but necessary.
